A Note From A Retired Moleskine

Retiring a pocket notebook is both sad and enlightening. Sad because we went through a lot, my notebook and I, catching all my random thoughts, spontaneous melodies and potential lyrics. Enlightening because there’s a whole lot of good stuff in there, insights and encouragement I’d forgotten. One golden nugget from my notebook comes from Stephen King in “On Writing”:

“Writing isn’t about money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work and enriching your own life as well. It’s about getting up, getting well, and getting over.”

Swap out “Writing” and replace it with your art and you’ve still got a timeless truth, an artist’s mission statement. I’ve made it mine.

Oh, and Borders sells an efficient and cheaper Moleskine-style pad made by Piccadilly. You can find one for about $4.
